Mbachu disappointed with Falcons’ slim victory over South Africa

The 38-year-old forward said she expected the country’s women’s team to have beaten the Bayana Bayana more than they did on Tuesday night

Stella Mbachu has said that she was disappointed Nigeria’s senior women national team were unable to beat the South African women more than one goal in their semi-final clash at the ongoing 10th African Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Desire Oparanozie 55th minute lone goal ensured the Super Falcons reached the final of the Championship, and the team’s former striker said she had expected coach Florence Omagbemi’s ladies to have beaten the Bayana Bayana at least 4-0 to shut them up once and for all.

“Of course, I saw the victory coming as I was convinced that we will beat the South Africans,” Mbachu told Supersport.

“What I did not see coming is the slim 1-0 win, I was expecting as many as four unreplied goals.

“That type of result would have once and for all made the South Africans admit and acknowledge their inferiority to the Nigerians.

“However, I think victory is all that matters, especially at the knockout stage of the championship.

“I want Falcons to continue with the momentum and winning aura in the next stage of the championship.

“The South Africans must be disappointed with the result as they have boasted of recreating the performance of 2012 in Equatorial Guinea.

“This victory is as sweet as honey and I’m hugely excited with the hard fought win.

“I charge Falcons to go all out to beat Cameroon as they did two years ago in Namibia.

“The pressure will be on Cameroon to impress before her people so Falcons must be calm and take their chances.

“I see Falcons successfully defending their title at the expense of Cameroon.”
