France began their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a bang, beating the Netherlands 4-0 in a dominant performance at the Stade de France.
It was their first win since the World Cup final defeat and sent a strong message to the rest of their group.
The game started with a lot of buzz around the France captaincy, with Kylian Mbappe being chosen over Antoine Griezmann. However, Mbappe’s decision to give the ball to Griezmann, who then side-footed it into the net in the second minute, showed that the team was united and focused on winning.
France continued to press forward and doubled their lead inside eight minutes after Jasper Cillessen failed to deal with Griezmann’s free-kick. The ball ricocheted off Dayot Upamecano and rolled through the Dutch goalkeeper’s legs into the net. The Netherlands were stunned and could not find a way back into the game.

Mbappe scored his first goal as captain in the 21st minute, after playing a one-two with Aurelien Tchouameni and racing towards the left-side of the penalty area to finish calmly. It was a superb team move and showcased France’s attacking prowess.

The Dutch tried to make a comeback by introducing Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst for Kenneth Taylor after just 33 minutes. However, they could not find a way past the French defence and were unable to trouble Mike Maignan in the goal.
Mbappe added insult to injury in the 88th minute, scoring a fabulous second goal after teasing Jurrien Timber and Daley Blind before firing across Cillessen.
Memphis Depay had a chance to pull one back for the Netherlands in stoppage time, but his penalty was saved by Maignan.
The victory was a testament to France’s depth and talent. They were missing some key players due to injuries and suspensions but still managed to dominate the game.
Mbappe and Griezmann were outstanding, but the entire team played with discipline and cohesion.
