Lionel Messi’s supporters will have a close-up look at every play the Argentinean makes on the field as he leads his Major League Soccer (MLS) team Inter Miami in the 2024 MLS Cup.
The MLS said on Monday that the iconic forward will wear a camera on his chest during every Inter Miami game in the league, a first for football, and that spectators will be able to watch his movements on the field through a TikTok livestream.
Although Messi capturing all the attention during a game is not new, this approach will be the first time a football game is streamed live on the social media site in its entirety with only one player in focus.
The “Player Spotlight” stream, referred to as “Messi Cam” by fans on social media, will start five minutes before kickoff for every Inter Miami match and will be available on the TikTok channels of both MLS and Inter Miami.
Recently, during a 2023 US Open Cup match, the MLS coverage had one camera focusing on the 37-year-old’s actions on the field in an effort to draw as many viewers as possible to the league’s top player but this time, the audience will be able to experience what Messi sees as if they were on the field with him during a game.
As the eight times Ballon d’Or award winner tries to win Miami’s first MLS Cup since moving to the US in 2023, fans will get a close-up look at his runs, moves, assists, goals, and celebrations.
In June 2023, the all time Barcelona star joined the US team, Inter Miami from Paris Saint Germain where he scored 32 goals in 75.
Messi has won the MLS Supporters’ Shield in October and the Leagues Cup in 2023 during his 16 months at Inter Miami. His squad is currently one among the favorites to win the MLS Cup in the United States.
