Mourinho becomes first manager to spend £1bn

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has become the first manager in football history to hit the £1bn landmark in career transfer spending.

The Red Devil’s purchase of Romelu Lukaku this summer took Mourinho passed the landmark after a 17-year career as a manager.

An analysis of the Portuguese tactician’s spending, carried out by ‘Sportsmail’, shows that Mourinho has now spent more than £1.1bn. All calculations took the pound sterling value at the time of each transaction.

Pep Guardiola is hot on the heels of Mourinho. The former Barcelona boss has spent has spent £859m, in a little over half the time.

Carlo Ancelotti is the only other manager that comes close to the colossal figures, spending £970m on transfers in his 22-year-career as a manager.
