In a heart-wrenching loss, Croatia fell short of claiming their first international trophy as they were defeated by Spain in the Nations League final on penalties.
The thrilling shootout concluded with Dani Carvajal calmly chipping in the winning shot, securing a 5-4 victory for Spain after Unai Simon’s crucial save against Bruno Petkovic.
The highly anticipated clash in Rotterdam ended goalless after extra time, setting the stage for the dramatic penalty shootout. This triumph marks Spain’s first international title in 11 years, following their success at Euro 2012.
Midfielder Rodri, who was named man of the match, expressed the team’s elation, highlighting the challenge they faced in the final. Rodri’s impressive run continues, having already achieved the Treble with Manchester City and scored the winning goal in the Champions League final.
He believes that this victory could mark the beginning of another era of Spanish dominance, with several talented young players such as Gavi, Ansu Fati, and Yeremy Pino in their ranks.

Spain’s triumph also grants them the distinction of being the second nation, after France, to win the World Cup, European Championship, and Nations League. They had an opportunity to secure the shootout earlier when Simon saved a penalty from Lovro Majer, but Aymeric Laporte’s strike hit the crossbar. Nevertheless, Simon’s subsequent save against Petkovic allowed Carvajal to emerge as the hero.

Carvajal expressed the significance of the victory for Spain, referring to their early exit in the 2022 World Cup. He had confidence in their penalty-taking abilities and executed his own shot ‘Panenka’ style, securing the victory.
For Croatia, who reached the final of the 2018 World Cup and finished third in Qatar 2022, the quest to clinch their first major title fell agonizingly short. The team enjoyed strong support in Rotterdam, with Croatian flags and red-and-white shirts filling the De Kuip stands.
The final also presented an opportunity for Luka Modric, earning his 166th international cap, to cap off his illustrious career with a coveted international trophy. Despite a slow start, Croatia grew into the game, causing difficulties for Spain with their direct style of play. They continued to apply pressure, but it was Spain who had the better chances, with Marco Asensio, Fabian Ruiz, and Ansu Fati coming close to breaking the deadlock.
As penalties ultimately decided the outcome, Spain celebrated their glory while Croatia faced profound disappointment. The future remains uncertain for Modric, with the 37-year-old former Ballon d’Or winner expected to make an announcement regarding his international future.
The defeat may influence his decision to continue playing and aim for redemption in the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
