NBA: Atalanta Hawks Lou Williams retires from basketball

Atlanta Hawks Superstar Lou Williams has announced his retirement after an amazing 17-year career in the NBA.

The 37-year-old made the announcement on his Instagram page on Sunday.

Willams was selected as the 45th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft making a name for himself as a highly skilled role player. Having being drafted out of South Gwinnett High School by the Philadelphia Sixers, he was coached by the likes of Allen Iverson and Chris Webber as he earned more minutes on the court.

The young rookie soon evolved into one of the League’s best sixth men earning the prestigious Sixth Man of the Year Award on three different occasions throughout his career, securing the award in 2015, 2018, and 2019.

Throughout his career, Williams showcased his versatility and ability to come off the bench, impact the game and lift his team to new heights. The 2017-18 season can arguably be regarded as his most outstanding season while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged an impressive 22.6 points per game, along with 2.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, stomping his name as one of the most outstanding forces on the court.

He also had the privilege of representing six different NBA teams. From the beginning with the Philadelphia 76ers to the Atalanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets and the Clippers, leaving his mark on every franchise he represented.

Williams returned to Atalanta where it all began in 2021, playing his final season as a professional basketball player and hanging up his basketball shoes.
