NCC Tennis League: Team Optiwebb humiliate VGC Lions in Lagos

Team VGC Lions of Lagos were humiliated right on their Lekki courts by Team Optiwebb last weekend, as the Ilorin side went home with a 7-0 victory over their hosts in one of the Blue Group matches at the ongoing Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC Tennis League.
Though, it was a dead rubber game in the Blue group of the NCC Tennis League, but the visitors surprisingly made it a one-sided affair.
Team Optiwebb thus finished their debut campaign in the NCC Tennis League fourth with two points, ahead of VGC Lions who had one point and Team Oluyole with no point on the table.
Team VGC Lions had beaten Team Oluyole 5-2 in the NCC Tennis League season’s opener in Ibadan, but it turned out to be their only victory in the season.
On the opening day {Saturday}, Uche Okparaoji gave Optiwebb the first victory as he pipped Lions’ Tobi Thomas 6-3, 6-4 in the men’s singles. Emmanuel Ikakah also triumped over home boy, Pius Aneikan 7-6, 6-0 in another men’s singles.
Team Optiwebb’s Oluchi Ozurumba made it 3-0 as she outplayed Temmy Nzewe 6-3, 6-0 in the ladies singles, while the visitors rounded off the opening day with victory in the men’s doubles.
The pair of Kareem Badmus and Henry John humbled the homers’ duo of Tobi Thomas and Pius Aneikan 6-4, 6-4 to win the fixture even on 4-0 scoreline.
The woes of the Lions continued the following day as Isaac Emeruwa triumphed over Coach Benson of VGC Lions 6-2, 4-2 retired, while Kareem Badmus edged past Pius Aneikan 7-5, 6-0 in another men’s reverse singles.
The demolition of the homers was completed in the mixed doubles as Henry John and Ngozi Dirisu outplayed Coach Benson who paired with Temmy Nzewe in a game which ended in 6-3, 6-2.
The first two teams in both Blue and White Groups will play in the semi-final enroute to the final where the winners will take home N7million as prize money, while the second placed team will settle for N5million.
The third and fourth placed teams will go home with N3million and N2millon respectively according to the organisers of the NCC Tennis League.
