New UEFA rules mean Man Utd’s Europa League celebrations will be very different if they win

NEW UEFA rules mean Manchester United’s post-match Europa League celebrations will be very different this year if they win.

Jose Mourinho’s men take on Ajax inside the Friends Arena on Wednesday 24 in a bid to win their third trophy of the season and gain Champions League football next term.

The Red Devils edged past Celta Vigo in the semi-finals, beating La Liga outfit 2-1 on aggregate. Their Eredivisie opponents, meanwhile, beat Lyon 5-4 overall.

And should United win on Wednesday, their post-match celebrations could be very different.

Could the Europa League trophy be coming home to Old Trafford

On Wednesday, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin confirmed that the trophies of the Champions League, Europa League and Women’s Champions League will be presented on the pitch this year.

In recent years, the presentations have taken place in the stands before moving down to the pitch.

According to UEFA, “The return to on-pitch presentations will give all fans in the stadium a better view of the trophy lifts, while the television audience will also get clearer pictures”.

Mr. Ceferin added: “The pitch is the players’ stage and it is only fitting that their achievements are celebrated there.”

“It also makes sense that the officials should come down from the stands to the players – to their arena – and pay tribute to them in presenting the trophy and medals on the playing surface.

“Players will also be able to celebrate with their team-mates on the pitch in full view of the fans without the interruption of having to climb up to the stand

“Furthermore, all supporters will get a perfect view of the trophy lift wherever they are seated in the stadium.”
