TWO of the nine boxers that Team Nigeria registered for the ongoing 22nd Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 will start medal chase today.
In the women’s category, Bolanle Shogbamu will start from the round of 16 when she faces England’s Jodie Wilkinson in a -70kg light middleweight’ bout.
Sogbamu, gold medallist at the 2019 African Games in Morocco is expected to put her wealth of experience to bear on the Briton opponent and give Nigerians cause to smile after the bout.
Also today, 2019 African Games silver medallist Abdul-Afeez Osoba, who is also the captain of the boxing team, will start his medal campaign in the round of 32 when he takes on Bahama’s Carl Hield in the -71kg light middleweight category.
The remaining boxers to be paraded by Team Nigeria at Birmingham 2022 are Adeyinka Benson, 75kg middleweight; Ehwarieme Innocent, 81kg light- heavyweight; Onyekwere Ifeanyi 92kg+ superheavyweight; Egunjobi Yetunde, 50kg light-flyweight; Oshoba Elizabeth, 57kg featherweight; Ogunsemilore Cynthia, 60kg lightweight and Umunnakwe Jacinta, 75kg middleweight.
The Nigerian boxing team is coached by Anthony Konyegwachie (male) and Peace Epia (female).
