NNL Super 8: Oborevwori congratulates Warri Wolves

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has congratulated Warri Wolves on their victory at the 2025 Nigerian National League (NNL) Super 8, which earned them the championship title and a long-awaited return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The Delta club emerged champions of the League after edging Wikki Tourists of Bauchi 3-2 in a thrilling final match played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, on Saturday.

The Seasiders, as they are fondly called, stunned fans with a dominant first-half performance, racing to a three-goal lead with strikes from Lateef Yusuf, Igbunu Evwierhurhoma, and Efe Yarherhe.

Yusuf opened the scoring early, while Evwierhurhoma and Yarherhe added two more within the first 31 minutes, giving Warri Wolves a strong cushion.

Wikki Tourists fought back tenaciously as Mahmood Aliyu pulled one back just before halftime, and Wonderson added a second for the Bauchi-based side early in the second half, setting up a tense finish.

Oborevwori, in a statement issued in Asaba on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, praised the Seasiders for their determination, resilience, and team spirit throughout the season.

He hailed the historic win as a “well-deserved triumph” and commended the players, coaches, and management for their outstanding performance, saying it was a reaffirmation of Delta’s reputation as the home of champions.

Oborevwori particularly applauded the Delta State Sports Commission and the team’s handlers for their professionalism, strategic planning, and commitment, which, he noted, were instrumental in Warri Wolves’ return to the elite division of Nigerian football.

“I heartily congratulate Warri Wolves Football Club on their glorious return to the Nigeria Premier League. This victory is not only for Warri but for the entire Delta State.

“I commend the players, the technical crew, the management, and especially the Delta State Sports Commission for their dexterity, focus, and unwavering dedication.

“Your collective efforts have restored pride to our state and rekindled hope among our sports-loving people. The government remains committed to supporting sports at all levels and creating opportunities for our youth to thrive”, Oborevwori stated.

Governor Oborevwori emphasised that Warri Wolves’ return to the NPFL would re-energise the football culture in the state and promote youth involvement in sports development. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to investing in sports infrastructure, talent development, and support for professional teams across Delta.

He said: “Our government will continue to promote excellence in sports and provide the enabling environment for our athletes and teams to succeed. Warri Wolves have, once again, proven that with vision, leadership, and teamwork, success is inevitable.”

The NNL Super 8 tournament, held from July 5 to 12, was graced by top dignitaries, including Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, Monday Onyeme , former Minister of Sports Development, Sunday Dare.

Other clubs that featured in the competition include Doma United FC, Barau FC, Yobe Desert Stars FC, Kun Khalifat FC, Crown FC, and Osun United FC.

With the victory, Warri Wolves clinched a N5 million prize and sealed promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), returning to the top tier after more than four years in the lower division.

It would be recalled that Warri Wolves’ return to the NPFL marks the end of a difficult chapter and the beginning of a new era. Originally founded in 1998 as NPA FC and rebranded as Warri Wolves in 2003, the club rose to national prominence in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
