Outrage as FIFA names South African referee for Nigeria–Gabon World Cup playoff

FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-South African officiating crew for Nigeria’s World Cup playoff against Gabon has sparked anger among fans and officials.

The first leg of the playoff will be held on November 13 in Rabat, with Tom Abongile as the centre referee, assisted by Zakhele Siwela and Akhona Makalima, while a referee assessor from Benin Republic will oversee proceedings.

However, a senior NFF officia Osasu Obayiuwanal called the choice “baffling” and said South Africa is “clearly hostile” after the South African sports minister publicly wished Nigeria wouldn’t qualify.

“How can FIFA appoint a South African referee after their sports minister openly said he wished Nigeria would not qualify for the World Cup? South Africa are clearly hostile to us,” Obayiuwana quoted the official on his X handle on Thursday.

On X, @PoojaMedia wrote, “In fairness & sentiments, South African officials shouldn’t be appointed… CAF should rethink this fast.”

Other users demanded the NFF lodge an official protest, echoing earlier calls when Senegal’s referee was swapped.

The world body says the appointments come from its Referees Committee and are based on competence and neutrality.

South African officials are among the continent’s most experienced, regularly handling CAF Champions League and AFCON matches.

The controversy adds extra pressure to a match that could decide Nigeria’s route to the 2026 World Cup.
