Oyo Governor’s Cup kicks off in grand style as Urban Day, Bishop Felix Academy win big

The maiden edition of the Oyo State Governor’s Cup for Secondary School Students started on a good note, as a total of 18 matches were played on the opening day of the preliminaries.

The Football Championship proudly sponsored by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns recorded a total number of 55 goals across five centres on Monday.

The Ibadan zone witnessed the presence of former Super Eagles midfielders, Mutiu Adepoju and Seyi Olofinjana, who were indeed impressed with the display of football artistry from the teenagers.

Urban Day Secondary School, Ibadan were the first team to record a victory, defeating Community Grammar School, Akinlumo, by 5-0. A brace each from Taiwo Wahiz and Emmanuel Olaseni gave them a smooth ride over their counterpart.

In the second game of the day, Bishop Felix Academy defeated Idito Community Grammar School, 6-0. Yusuf Ibrahim and Azeez Timilehin also scored a brace each in the encounter.

In Oyo, Fiditi Grammar School, defeated Community Grammar School, Jobele, 2-0, and Anglican Methodist Secondary School, Oyo, defeated Durbar Grammar School, 3-0.

Other results from Oyo West, had Fasola Grammar School, coming tops, in a seven-goal thriller, defeating Baptist Community Secondary School, by 4-3.

Speaking after the games, in Ibadan, former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Super Eagles Midfielder, Seyi Olofinjana, was ecstatic, hailing the brand of football, while also praising the organisers and Sponsor of the Governor’s Cup.

“This is a huge step towards success and one that should be encouraged for the development of our football through the grassroots, football and education are two things that should go together. I am elated with what I saw today and hope to see more as time goes on.”

LaLiga Nigeria Chief, Mutiu Adepoju who was also present said a lot, about encouraging and investing in Schools Sports, which will in turn yield a better future for Nigerian Sports in general.

Also speaking, Yomi Elijah, the Founder of the School Sports Foundation and Organisers of the competition, was fulfilled with the organisation and tasked everyone involved to keep on putting in their best to have a very successful tournament.

“I am indeed surprised with the level of talents seen here today, it means that if we put more into school sports, we would discover more hidden talents.

“We will keep monitoring these talents and nurture them to greatness. That’s one of the reasons, the Oyo Governor’s Cup is here.

Also present at the Urban Day Secondary School Football Pitch was the Project Manager of Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, Sponsor of the Oyo Governor’s Cup, Engineer Olalekan Adeleke, who was deeply satisfied with the organisation, tasking all participants to imbibe the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

The Competition is an initiative of the Schools Sports Foundation, headed by Yomi Elijah, a UK trained Football Coach and former Coach of Remo Stars, Lobi Stars, ABS FC, and Kogi United and is proudly sponsored by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, other partners are Olafiranye Sports Foundation, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Ministry of Sports, Oyo State Sports Council, Kidzfoot Nigeria and others.
