Premier League Review: Spurs crush Palace as Wolves fail to escape drop zone

Leeds United 2-2 West Ham

Leeds and West Ham play out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Elland Road, in a game where either side could have snatched the three points.

Wilfried Gnonto scored his first Premier League goal for the Whites with a brilliant finish on his left foot, but Lucas Paqueta answered from the penalty spot after Jarrod Bowen was fouled by Pascal Struijk.

Gianluca Scamacca capitalised on a mistake by Brendon Aaronson to put the visitors ahead early in the second half, only for Rodrigo Moreno to answer to level the scores. Rodrigo had two great chances to win the game for the hosts, while Michail Antonio came a whisker away on the stretch in stoppage time. Both sides will be pleased to leave with a share of the spoils.

Both sides are in FA Cup action at the weekend. Leeds are on the road to Cardiff City on Sunday, January 8, 2023, while West Ham face Brentford away on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

Crystal Palace 0-4 Spurs

Spurs shook off their recent poor form to sink London rivals Crystal Palace 4-0 in a second-half masterclass. After a first-half in which they were distinctly second-best, Spurs looked set to continue their spell of poor post-World Cup form, but Conte’s charges came out firing in the second half.

Harry Kane, as ever, popped up to lash home two goals with the second period just eight minutes old, and before long, Doherty and Son had joined the party, capitalising on defensive errors from Palace. \

It’s Spurs’ first victory since the restart, and they consign Palace to a second defeat in three games with a clinical performance.

That heavy defeat, accompanied by other results in corresponding games, sees Palace fall a place to 12th in the table, though still five points clear of Leicester in 13th. A first win in three for Tottenham gives their push to the top renewed verve, as Spurs stay fifth but close the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Manchester United to just two points.

Their next game, a north London derby against league leaders Arsenal, will be the ultimate test for Conte’s side though, and they’ll need to take everything good about this second-half performance if they’re to topple their biggest rivals.

Aston Villa 1-1 Wolves

Wolves miss the chance to move out of the Premier League’s relegation zone after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa. The visitors took a first-half lead at Villa Park through Podence in the 12th minute, but they were pegged back 12 minutes from time when substitute Ings rescued a point for the hosts.

Both sides are in FA Cup action this weekend. Wolves travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in an all-Premier League clash on Saturday, with Villa welcoming League Two side Stevenage the following day.
