Sergio Ramos equalled Lionel Messi’s record of scoring in 15 La Liga seasons as Real Madrid beat Girona on Sunday.
The Spanish defender opened the scoring with a panenka-style penalty as Los Blancos climbed to the top of the league with a 4-1 victory in their second game of the season.
The goal means Ramos has now scored in each of the last 15 seasons in Spain — only Lionel Messi has managed that.
He is currently the 13th highest scorer in La Liga when counting only players who are still playing. And his 56-goal tally is 25 better than any other defender in the 21st century.
In an interview with Sportsmail last year one of Ramos best friends at Real Madrid Lucas summed up the club captain’s attacking talent. He said: ‘He has a special gift and it comes from an incredible self-confidence that he can resolve any situation.

‘He’s a world-class defender, the best in the world without any doubt, but then he has that ability to appear when the team needs him most.
‘If he was playing centre forward in any other team he would get 20 goals a season.’
Madrid have made a strong start to the season, winning both of their opening two game.
