‘Record is safe’, John Terry reacts to Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat to Man United

Former Chelsea captain, John Terry, has reacted after Arsenal failed to surpass Chelsea’s record for fewest goals conceded in a Premier League season.

Arsenal’s attempt to match Chelsea’s defensive record from 2004-05 ended after their 3-2 loss to Manchester United.

The defeat took Arsenal to 17 goals conceded, leaving Terry’s record of 15 intact.

Terry took to social media to celebrate Chelsea’s record. “The record is safe for another year.

“January 25th, 2026 and the record is safe. Man United 2, Arsenal 1. Still 25 minutes to go but the record is safe for another season. So Petr Cech, Paolo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, William Gallas, it’s time to celebrate with a bottle or a glass of red wine. I’m going for the bottle for celebration tonight,” he wrote on Sunday night, before posting a video message.

Terry also questioned whether the record could ever be broken. “Can this record of 15 goals conceded in one season ever be beaten? I’m saying no…

“I have to say I was a little bit worried the way Arsenal started the season and how well they started but it’s only January and the record has already gone and it’s safe for another year. I still get frustrated today, it could have been sub 10.”

Arsenal had started the season well and appeared on track to challenge one of the Premier League’s longstanding records.

After eight games, they had conceded just three goals. A drop in defensive form has now left them with 17 goals conceded after 23 matches, ending any chance of matching Chelsea’s mark.

The key moment came at the Emirates, where Manchester United came from behind to win 3-2.

Lisandro Martínez’s own goal gave Arsenal the lead, Bryan Mbeumo equalised, Patrick Dorgu put United ahead, and Matheus Cunha scored late to seal the comeback.

The loss ended Arsenal’s challenge for the defensive record and affected their title bid.

Chelsea’s record of conceding just 15 goals in a season remains the benchmark for defensive performance in the league.
