Villa chairman Tony Xia ended Di Matteo’s reign as Villa boss this morning with the club sat 19th in the Championship
ASTON VILLA have put Steve Clarke in temporary charge until they appoint their next boss.
Steve Bruce and Lee Johnson are now understood by SunSport to be two of their top targets – with Sam Allardyce also a contender with the bookies.
Villa are on the look-out for a new gaffer after sacking Roberto Di Matteo this morning – and former Reading boss Clarke could also be in the running for the job on a full-time basis.
The Midlands club decided to swing the axe at Villa Park after the 2-0 defeat at Preston left them just two points clear of the Championship relegation zone.
They already have two stand-out candidates in their sights – former Hull manager Bruce and Bristol City’s impressive boss Johnson.
Bruce is currently a free agent after deciding to quit Hull just before the start of the season, despite leading them to promotion to the Premier League.
Villa know he has vast experience of bringing success at Championship level, and the fact he is available is a huge attraction.
But they have also been impressed by the work Johnson has been doing at Bristol City on a limited budget.
The 35-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest up and coming managers in the game having proven himself at Oldham and now Ashton Gate.
But with City currently sitting fifth in the Championship, it would mean Villa would have to come up with a big compensation package to tempt the Robins into doing business.
Allardyce could also be on Villa’s radar after being axed as England manager just 67 days into the job.
And Villa fans have taken to social media to voice their concern that you can get a similar price on Steve McClaren – around 8-1.
Di Matteo’s spell in charge at Villa Park was a disaster, with the team having collected just ten points from the first eleven matches.
Villa have tasted victory just once in all competitions this season, and are struggling to lift the gloom around the club following relegation from the Premier League last season.
