Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has praised the duo of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and defender Brian Idowu, after their impressive debut performances in the Eagles’ 4-2 win over Argentina in an international friendly on Tuesday night. AOIfootball report.
Idowu scored on his debut after coming on for Ola Aina at half time, while Uzoho who replaced shaky goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to ensure the Super Eagles’ post was not bridged.
“Brian is a newcomer in the team, but he’s not the only one. We have three new players, and I would like to highlight our 19-year-old goalkeeper Uzoho. He played well. Such matches are specially designed so that we can assess new players in the team. We have three players who have a special relationship with Russia.
“We have Ahmed Musa and the captain of the team, Mikel Obi, he has a connection here through the family. Brian played well, scored a goal. His prospects depend on how he will perform at the club. His debut, I’m happy. On his position we have other options, so who will pick who plays better, he will be involved in the fight,” Rohr stated afterwards.
The Franco-Gernan coach also promised Nigerians that he will continue to strengthen the team ahead of the World Cup in Russia to ensure the Super Eagles have a formidable team heading to the mundial.
“The team is not there yet; we tried a new formation today against one of the best teams in the world and you can all see the impact, so we will continue to find the right solutions for this team,” Rohr added.
“It’s possible to still see new faces next year because we will give every player a chance to prove to us they deserve to wear the national jersey. We will get there soon, hopefully,” Rohr concluded.
