Russia 2018 goal scorers

VICTOR OGUNSESAN takes a look at the top scorers of the Russia 2018, after the first round of matches.

The thrilling first round saw 38 goals scored from all 16 matches. A total of nine penalties were awarded with seven of them converted. Also, five own goals were scored in the first round. Of the total 38 goals, a small group of five players are leading the race for the Golden Boot, which is awarded to the highest goal scorer of the tournament. With 11 goals amongst them, eyes are on these players as the tournament progresses.

1.   Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portugal captain is top on the list having scored a hat-trick in Portugal’s first game against tournament favourites, Spain. The goals by the Real Madrid talisman held Spain to a 3-3 draw at the Ficht Stadium on Friday, 15 June. He played full time and managed four shots.

2.    Diego Costa

The Atletico Madrid and Spain striker managed two goals in his 77 minutes of play in Spain’s opening game against Euro 2016 winners, Portugal. However, Costa’s brace could not salvage Spain as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

  1. Denis Cheryshev

Russian midfielder, Denis Cheryshev scored a left-footed shot in the latter part of the first half and a 91st minute stunner to take his tally to two when the hosts pummelled Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the World Cup opening match at the Luzhniki Stadium.

  1. Romelu Lukaku

The Manchester United ace and Belgian star has also scored two goals at the ongoing World Cup. He scored the brace in the 3-0 rout of Central Americans, Panama, at the Ficht Stadium on Monday. Lukaku has been on top form for the Belgian side as he has scored 15 goals in his last 10 games.

  1. Harry Kane

England forward, Harry Kane, is also a player to look out for as the tournament progresses. The Tottenham Hotspur skipper scored both of England’s goals in their 2-1 victory over Tunisia on Monday.
