Super Eagles’ striker, Henry Onyekuru has praised the youthful setup in the current team, saying it will help them build for the future, while also positing that Nigeria is one of the dreaded teams coming for the World Cup in Russia.
The on-loan Everton of England striker told AOIFootball.com from his base in Belgium where his current team Anderlecht are preparing for a clash with his former club, AS Eupen in the penultimate match before the winter break, saying the future can only get better for the Eagles with the right combination of youth and experience.
“I think youth is a great thing and it will give us time to build for the future and understand each other’s game better.
“The Super Eagles are one of the most feared teams in the World Cup. Back here in Belgium, anytime I wear the national team’s jersey, I hear fans saying I hope Belgium don’t face them, this shows how well our football has developed over the past few years,” Onyekuru said.
The Anderlecht striker, however eased fears of the Super Eagles going into the World Cup with an inexperience squad, saying age sometimes is just a number.
“I believe we have the experience; our captain (Mikel) is an example to all of us. He has played in a few World Cups and seen it all in terms of football and the young guys in the team like Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and even Ola Aina, have played in great European clubs and under great managers, so as they say, age is only a number,” Onyekuru concluded.
Onyekuru is currently the joint highest goals scorer in the Belgian top division league with 9 goals and has been attracting interests from big European clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona.
