Barrister Jubril Mohammed, the initiator of RYF and personal lawyer to the late Nigeria goal king, Rashidi Yekini, led other members of the group to the corporate office of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN Plc) publishers of the Tribune titles in Ibadan to present the award.
The Golden Boot Award instituted to immortalise Yekini, the late 1993 African Footballer of the Year was won by former Warri Wolves striker, Gbolahan Salami last season after scoring 17 goals.
Wikki Tourists forward, Godwin Obaje, finished as the top scorer at the just-ended season with 18 goals and will be presented with the award at this year’s Gold Cup competition tomorrow at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.
Speaking during the presentation, Barrister Mohammed said the visit was also to appreciate the management of ANN Plc for the support the RYF has been enjoying from the Tribune titles, especially the sports desk, which gives publicity to their programmes generously.
“We are delighted to be here to unveil this year’s Golden Boot Award through your organisation before we finally present the award to Godwin Obaje of Wikki Tourists on Saturday in Ijebu Ode.
“Apart from this Golden Boot Award, there will also a cash prize of N100,000 and letters of commendation from the two daughters of the late Yekini, Yemi and Yemisi.
“My joy is that we are able to keep the name of Yekini in the minds of soccer-loving Nigerians. People now remember his name and what he stood for in the country, that is my joy and gain so far,” Mohammed, a former defender said.
Responding, the Associate Editor, Sports, Mr Wale Emosu thanked the RYF for always putting Tribune family in mind, just as he assured them of total support whenever the need arises.
“I hope the award in subsequent years will make today’s players who never knew Rashidi to dig into history to really know the late Rashidi Yekini through his exploits. It is a good initiative which must be supported to continue,” Emosu said.
