Coach Diego Simeone claims Atletico Madrid need a bigger squad following Sunday’s surprise defeat to Espanyol.
The loss ended Atletico’s unbeaten home record in La Liga this season, with Espanyol doing the double over them despite languishing in mid table.
Simeone did make several changes to his side in preparation for next week’s Europa League final with Marseille, with the defeat opening the door for Real Madrid to overhaul them into second place.
And the Argentine boss has openly admitted he does not have the personnel to make wholesale changes to his squad.
“We have very few players and this can be problematic,” he told Marca. “For this game we had [Diego] Costa and [Angel] Correa suspended, Gabi and [Diego] Godin are both 32 and they both put in a lot of energy to Thursday, as did [Antoine] Griezmann.
“We have a busy schedule and with the size of our squad, you have to accept that these things will happen.”
