The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has praised the exceptional performance of Super Eagles in their 2-0 triumph over Cameroon during their Round of 16 clash at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The minister also has extended his warm congratulations to hurdle sensation, Tobi Amusan, for her extraordinary accomplishment in setting a new African women’s indoor record in the 60-metre hurdles at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan.
Enoh, in a message signed by his special adviser on media, Diana-Mary Tiku Nsan, and made available to Sporting Tribune, said the Eagles’ victory showcased the team’s undiluted resilience, determination, and fighting spirit.
“The resilience, determination, and fighting spirit of Nigeria’s Super Eagles paid off in a spectacular fashion on Saturday evening. The team’s commitment to excellence and unity was evident and I commend each player for their exceptional performance.”
The minister, who highlighted the significance of the victory, said it is not only for the team, but for the entire nation.
“This win is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent that our nation possesses. It not only brings joy to football fans across the country, but also enhances Nigeria’s reputation on the international stage.
“As we look ahead to the quarter-finals, I have full faith in the Super Eagles. Their journey so far has showcased their resilience and unity. I encourage them to maintain this momentum and give their best in the upcoming matches,” Enoh said.
On Amusan, the minister said her outstanding performance at the meet not only showcased her exceptional athleticism but also her unwavering dedication to the sport. Clocking an impressive 7.77 seconds, Amusan not only secured victory but also etched her name in history by erasing the longstanding record of 7.82 seconds set by Glory Alozie in 1999.
“Tobi Amusan has demonstrated the epitome of true athleticism and we are immensely proud of her. Her dedication and commitment to her craft are an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the continent. Tobi’s achievement is not only a personal triumph but a historic moment for Nigerian and African sports.
“Tobi’s success is a testament to her hard work and the talent that exists within our nation. Her accomplishment resonates not only in Nigeria but throughout Africa, reinforcing our position on the global sports stage.
“This is just the beginning for Tobi. I have no doubt that she will continue to achieve great milestones in her career, and we eagerly anticipate her future endeavours.”
