Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has assured that the vacant position of the Super Eagles coach will be filled soon as the search for a quality coach continues.
Recall that Finidi George resigned as Super Eagles coach after barely two months in charge following an unimpressive run of results which has seen the three-time African champions’ qualifications for the 2026 World Cup in jeopardy.
But, Enoh, while addressing a media parley in Abuja on Thursday, said the issue of coach for the Super Eagles is a very technical issue that he’s already discussing with the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) but quickly added that the buck stops on the table of the football house to come up with not just a quality coach but whose at the mention of his name, football-crazy Nigerians will heave a sigh of relief.
“The issue of coach (for Super Eagles) is very important. It’s a very technical issue. The search for the Super Eagles coach is still in progress. When the time comes, the name will be known to Nigerians not through me but the NFF. But definitely, I’m engaging the NFF on this.
“What I know is that I urged the NFF to get Super Eagles a good, capable coach who will against all odds get the country the tickets to the 2026 World Cup as well as the next African Nations Cup. We must have a very good quality coach who at the announcement of his name, Nigerian’s confidence will be restored.”
The minister also revealed that work is about to start to renovate the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja and make sure that it can host Super Eagles’ games as well as CAF-organised competitions.
He added that the Borno State government has formally applied to the Sports Ministry so that 2024 President Federation Cup champions, El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri can host their home games in the CAF Confederation Cup at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
“We are working assiduously to see that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and others meet international standards to host the Super Eagles and other international matches (CAF-organised games).
“In fact, El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri has applied to use the stadium as home ground for the CAF Confederation Cup games,” Enoh said.
