SWAN names Finitri best North-East gov in sports development

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has announced the governor of Adamawa state, Ahamadu Finitri as the best governor in North-East in sports development.

In a statement signed by the National President of SWAN, Isaiah Benjamin and Secretary General, Ikena Okonkwo after its National Executive Council meeting named five other governors as best in their geopolitical zones.

According to SWAN, the merit award/ conferment ceremony will be part of the Association’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Celebration, Compendium Launch and Investiture holding on 31 October 2025 in Abuja.

In a letter to the governor, the body of sports journalists attributed the honour on the governor for his administration’s remarkable strides in grassroots and elite sports, and youth development in the state.

The statement read, “Notable among his administration’s strides include completing the over three decades Numan road stadium and making it world class, which is set for commissioning in November, 2025, sponsoring state to all National Youth games and National Sports Festival consecutively.

“Construction and renovation of Adamawa sports council buildings that was ravaged during a bomb blast in 2018.

“Governor Finitri is the only governor in the zone that gives women a chance to grow in female football, he sponsors the Adamawa Queens and are playing national division one for years now.

“He has purchased brand new 32-seater bus for both the male and female team.”

The letter also stated that the governor has sponsored state athletes to local, nation and international championships and these athletes have won over 30 trophies in the two years.

“SWAN states that Finitri’s administration has also shown foresight in creating sustainable career opportunities for athletes and coaches through training and retraining.

“SWAN states that these commitment, intervention and determination have distinguished Adamawa State under the Governor’s leadership in line with the quest to use sports as a tool for youth empowerment, social integration, and economic growth,” the statement added.
