The Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Mbadiwe Emelumba, has described the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) as a critical stakeholder in the development of sports in the country.
Emelumba made the remarks when members of the Imo State chapter of SWAN paid him a courtesy visit in his office, where he reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting sports journalism.
According to the commissioner, sports journalists play an essential role in promoting sporting activities and achievements across the state.
“Sports writers are very vital stakeholders because sports rule the world, and I acknowledge the vital role played by sports journalists in promoting sports development in Imo State,” he said.
He assured the association that the state government would consider its request for a permanent secretariat within the Dan Anyiam Stadium complex.
“Having a secretariat at the stadium is feasible, so we will take it up,” Emelumba said. “I can also assure you that whenever any welfare package comes up for journalists, SWAN will be included.”
The commissioner also addressed concerns over the suspension of the Governor’s Media Awards, explaining that the programme had been put on hold but would be reconsidered.

He said sports journalism would be included if the awards resume, describing its previous omission as an oversight.
“If the governor decides to continue with the awards, sports will certainly be included,” he added.
Emelumba also commended Heartland Queens for reaching the final of the 2026 President Federation Cup, describing the feat as one that brought honour to Imo State.
The women’s team finished runners-up after losing 6-5 on penalties to Nasarawa Amazons following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
“The club actually made the state proud and truly deserves to be hosted by the governor,” he said.
“I will see how we can facilitate that meeting and also arrange your visit to the governor for further discussions. Most of the things you have requested can be done.”
He advised the association to formally present its requests to Governor Hope Uzodimma for official consideration, promising his support.
“Whatever I can do to support this association, I will do it,” Emelumba said.
Earlier, Imo SWAN Chairman, Cosmos Chukwuemeka, praised the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma for its continued investment in sports development.
He noted that improved welfare packages for players of Heartland FC and Heartland Queens, particularly the upward review of salaries, had positively influenced both teams.
Chukwuemeka, however, expressed disappointment over Heartland FC’s failure to secure immediate promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), while applauding Heartland Queens for their impressive Federation Cup campaign.
He urged the state government to officially receive the team in recognition of its achievement.
The SWAN chairman also highlighted challenges facing sports journalism in the state and appealed for the renovation and modernisation of the Dan Anyiam Stadium to improve sporting activities and media coverage.
He said upgrading the facility and providing a dedicated SWAN secretariat would further strengthen sports development and journalism in Imo State.
