President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, has commended sports journalists for their dedication to covering sporting events within and outside the country.
Benjamin gave the commendation in his message marking World Sports Journalists Day, celebrated this year under the theme: “Celebrating Excellence, Integrity, and the Power of Sports Journalism.”
According to him, sports journalism goes beyond reporting scores and results.
“Sports journalism is far more than reporting scores and results. It is about telling compelling human stories of perseverance, sacrifice, triumph and resilience.

“As we commemorate World Sports Journalists Day, we recognise the invaluable contributions of sports journalists across the globe. Today, we celebrate not just a profession but a calling, one that informs, educates, inspires and unites people through the universal language of sport.
“Sports journalism is about more than match reports. It is about holding institutions accountable, promoting transparency, preserving sporting history, and amplifying the voices of athletes, coaches, officials and communities whose lives are transformed by sport.”
Benjamin noted that sports journalists in Nigeria have consistently played a vital role in shaping public discourse on sports development.
“From grassroots competitions to international championships, SWAN members have remained steadfast in documenting our nation’s sporting journey while championing excellence and professionalism,” he said.
He observed that the rapid evolution of digital technology, artificial intelligence and social media has created both opportunities and challenges for sports journalism.
“The speed of information must never come at the expense of accuracy. The pursuit of engagement must never overshadow ethical responsibility. As professionals, we must continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, objectivity and credibility.”
The SWAN president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of its members through continuous training, professional development, innovation and strategic partnerships.
“We recognise that the future of sports journalism depends on our ability to embrace change while preserving the core values that define our profession,” he said.
Benjamin also encouraged young and aspiring sports journalists to pursue excellence with passion, discipline and an unwavering commitment to truth.
“Build your careers on credibility, continuous learning and respect for professional ethics. Together, we can continue to use the power of storytelling to inspire generations and advance Nigerian sport.”
