Team Nigeria has secured their first set of medals at the ongoing 24th edition of the CAA Senior Africa Athletics Championship in Accra, the Ghanaian capital.
Leading Nigeria’s charge on Day 1 of the championship are Divine Oladipo and Ameachi Obiageri, securing a silver and a bronze medal in a fiercely contested women’s discus throw at the continental showpiece.
Despite securing a medal, it was a day of mixed feelings for Obiageri, as she failed to throw as far as she desired.
She made this known in an interview, emphasising that her performance on Day 1 of the championship was way below her personal best.

“Honestly, today if you follow me, you know that my number is a lot higher than what I did today, I’ve been working on some technical things, and I think that is clear in how I performed today, but I’ll continue working this season so that I’ll be able to execute those things that I’m working on,” she explained.
Obiageri showered praises on Divine Oladipo, describing her as an influential member of the team.
For Obiageri, she stated that her main objective in Ghana was to make her people proud, which she believes she has accomplished.
“Divine did a really great job today. I think what’s most important today was to give Nigeria a medal. I’m happy that we were able to do great, two out of three, so I think what’s most important is being able to represent Nigeria and to win the medals that will make people at home proud,” she stressed.
Looking into the future, Ameachi Obiageri further explained that she will begin training ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“It’s all about consistency, me being able to execute these things I’ve been working on. If I’m able to do these, that will make me more confident against the stronger field of competitors,” she said.
