Mexican actor Cristo Fernandez, widely known for his role as Dani Rojas in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, has signed for American second-tier side, El Paso Locomotive, after completing a two-month trial with the club.
The 35-year-old joins the USL Championship side in a move that marks a return to competitive football years after his playing career was interrupted by injury.
Fernandez became popular globally for portraying the energetic footballer Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso between 2020 and 2023. The series gained worldwide attention during its three-season run and won several awards.
Before his acting career, Fernandez played youth football in Guadalajara, Mexico, but stopped playing at the age of 15 after suffering a knee injury.
Despite leaving the game early, he remained connected to football and recently trained with the second team of Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire earlier this year as part of his attempt to return to the sport professionally.
Speaking after completing the move, Fernandez said football had always remained part of his life despite his success in the entertainment industry.

“Football has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart,” he said.
Fernandez thanked El Paso Locomotive for giving him another opportunity to pursue his football ambition.
“I’m incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC, the club, coaches, staff, and especially my team-mates, for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one.
“This journey back to professional soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be.”
He added: “Maybe I’m just a crazy man with crazy dreams… so being here with the ‘Locos’ actually makes perfect sense.”
El Paso Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez also welcomed the signing and expressed confidence in Fernandez’s contribution to the team.
“Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line,” Gonzalez said.
