UEFA president condemns racist abuse on Aubameyang

UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin has labelled Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s racial abuse as ‘a disaster’ for football.

After the 29-year-old opened the scoring for Unai Emery’s men from the penalty spot in Sunday’s north London derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur, a banana skin was thrown towards his direction during celebration at the away end of the Emirates Stadium.

The Lilywhites have banned the supporter from their games while the Metropolitan Police have confirmed his arrest.

And the 51-year-old has expressed his displeasure at the incident while calling for sensitisation so as to curb racism.

“Racism is, of course, a big problem in football but it’s also a big problem in society, too, and not just racism, but sexism, too,” Ceferin told the Herald.

“We have to do more. We are doing quite a lot already and we sanction clubs and associations, but we need to educate as well. But when you see an event like that, it’s a disaster, if you ask me.”
