Van Dijk hits back at Rooney’s ‘lazy criticism’ over Liverpool leadership

Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk, has responded to criticism from former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, calling it “lazy criticism”.

Rooney had questioned Van Dijk’s leadership and body language during Liverpool’s recent slump, suggesting that he and teammate Mohamed Salah hadn’t “really led that team this season”.

Van Dijk dismissed Rooney’s comments, stating that it’s easy to blame others but the team works together to achieve their goals.

Van Dijk emphasized the importance of teamwork and collective responsibility, highlighting that when things go well, everyone shares the praise, but when things go poorly, the criticism often falls on a few individuals.

He also expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to overcome their current challenges, stating that they believe in themselves and will stay humble and keep working.

The criticism came after Liverpool’s four-game losing streak, which included a 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

However, the Reds bounced back with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa, with Van Dijk leading the team to victory. Liverpool now prepares for a crucial week, facing Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s four-game losing streak, including a recent defeat to Brentford, prompted criticism from Wayne Rooney, who said Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah hadn’t truly led the team this season.

“I didn’t hear him last year,” Van Dijk said, external after Liverpool arrested their slide with a win against Aston Villa on Saturday.

“It doesn’t hurt me. Just to come back to this particular player, obviously a legend, a big player of the game who inspired so many, I can say only positive things but I feel that comment is just I would say it’s a bit of a lazy criticism.

“It’s easy to blame the other players but he knows we do it together, trying to help each and every one of us to try to get out of this. Last year when things go well you don’t hear that at all. It is what it is.

“[Pundits] have to do that job. He has an opinion and we have to deal with it. There’s no hard feelings. I don’t take it personally.”

Wayne Rooney stated on his podcast that he still stands by his criticism of Virgil van Dijk’s leadership, despite acknowledging the defender’s exceptional skill, calling him one of the best in the world over the past five years.

“I’ve got full respect for Virgil. I think he’s a fantastic player.

“My job now as a pundit is to give my opinions on what I feel.

“I’m sure if you ask him or Arne Slot, he probably hasn’t been as good as he has been over the last few years. That was my comment which I stick by,” he said.

Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points. They face a crucial week with upcoming matches against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League.

“I’ve heard the reports as well about [Slot] being under pressure, but I don’t think we play at a club that makes rash decisions,” added Van Dijk.

“We all felt that we can work our way out of this. It’s not a guarantee, but we can do it together. As long as we believe, stay humble and keep working, we can do it, and we all have that feeling.”
