JAN VERTONGHEN has revealed why he does NOT think he will end his career at Tottenham.
The Belgium defender recently joined a host of Spurs stars by signing a new contract with the club, pledging his future until 2019.
But at 29 years old, honest Vertonghen believes he is unlikely to finish his career with the club – because one day he will not be good enough for them.
He said: “It’s very hard to finish your career at this level. It demands a lot of your body. I will try and do what is possible to stay at this level for as long as I can.
“Not many can play here until 36-37 but I will do my best to stay as long as I can.”
There was speculation Vertonghen could be on the move before he finally put pen to paper.
But he said: “A lot has changed since I came five years ago and only in a positive way. I moved to the new training round, new manager, new staff, new players, new mentality.
“My family is happy here. In two years we move to the new stadium, it’s the total picture. Last year we showed can compete with the biggest clubs in the league.
“That’s what we want at Tottenham. You can see all the players who have signed new contracts.
“As a club we raised or standards and that’s what we’re here for. Since the manager came he created new mentality.
“There’s different things going on at this club. The fact we’re disappointed to be out of the Champions League is positive. That’s where we want to play and where we belong.”
Spurs face CSKA Moscow at Wembley tomorrow night knowing a win or draw will guarantee them entry to the Europa League knockout stages.
Vertonghen said: “Tottenham is a team that wants to win trophies and compete at the highest level and Europa League is a perfect competition to show we want to compete at the highest level. We want to go through the final or as far as we can.”
