W-Cup final pitch invaders arrested after release from jail

Famous Russian punk band and activist group Pussy Riot have reportedly been detained by police immediately following their release from prison for having rushed the field during the World Cup final in Moscow on July 15.

The long-time Putin critics had just completed a 15-day sentence for disrupting the match between Croatia and France at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, during which the members of the group stormed the pitch wearing police-style outfits as a protest against Russia’s imprisonment of Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov.

Sensov, a vocal opponent of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, has been imprisoned in Russia for more than four years and was convicted by a military court of terrorism in a trial that Amnesty International denounced as biased.

A Russian source has reportedly confirmed that police took the group into custody again, as soon as they left their Moscow prison, but declined to explain why the rockers were being held.

According to the group, they have been accused of staging public events without prior notice and could face further fines or 10 more days in prison.

Previously, in 2012, group members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were held in prison for more than a year after performing a protest song in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
