W/Cup playoff: Lookman, Bassey share debut experience

Leicester City star Ademola Lookman has shared his excitement after making his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their World Cup qualifier against Ghana.

The former Everton man could have been at the last Africa Cup of Nations, but he could not confirm his switch from England to Nigeria in time. However, his switch was later confirmed in February.

Upon his switch of allegiance, Augustine Eguavoen selected the 24-year-old in his 25-man squad for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Ghana. And he finally made his debut for the three-time African champions when he replaced Moses Simon in the first leg of the doubleheader against the Black Stars.

In 16 minutes, Lookman had 13 touches and an 80 percent pass accuracy.

The Leicester City attacker took to social media to share his joy at making his first international appearance for Nigeria.

“Extremely proud and grateful to have made my Super Eagles debut. Thank you God for the opportunity. It means everything to put on the shirt and represent my country. See you on Tuesday. We need your support.”

Rangers left-back Calvin Bassey said he is honoured to have finally made his maiden appearance for the 2013 Afcon kings, but he insists African football is a lot more demanding than anything he had ever experienced.

The 22-year-old defender admits there were times against Ghana that he found it difficult to breathe, insisting he would need time to adjust.

But Bassey assures that winning is guaranteed over the Black Stars in the return leg.

“Obviously, we will get the win,” the Leicester City academy product told Scottish Daily.

“It was an honour to represent this great nation. Playing in Africa is a lot more physical; it’s just adjusting to the environment, the pitch, the weather, it’s harder to breathe, so it’s just adjusting to it.”
