The Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu has commended the Super Falcons’ feat in Nigeria after edging arch-rivals, South Africa, by 2 goals to 1 in a gruelling Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinal encounter.
The win on Tuesday evening cemented their place in the final and kept hope alive of a record-extending 10th continental title.
Shaibu described the match as “final before the final,” calling on the Coach Justin Madugu-led technical crew to bring home the cup for Nigerians.
Midfielder Rasheedat Ajibade and defender Michelle Alozie delivered when it mattered most, scoring either side of a Linda Motlhalo penalty to help the Super Falcons avenge their 2022 loss to Banyana Banyana.
While tasking the team and the technical crew to be focused ahead of the final match against the host country, Morocco, the NIS DG promised to be in Morocco for the final match, calling on the girls to put more pressure on the Moroccans.
A statement by the SA Media to the DG, Ben Ogbemudia, quoted Shaibu as saying, “Our ladies need to improve on the game with South Africa. We were just lucky to have that additional goal. So, I look forward to seeing them improve on their game against Morocco, bearing in mind that they are the host country.”
