Liverpool reported back to Melwood for pre-season training, with star-signing Mohamed Salah set to join the squad later due to international commitments. The Reds only other signing, U20 starlet Dominic Solanke reported back along with his new teammates.
Klopp’s team have repeatedly been linked with a club-record move for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and, with negotiations stalled at the moment, the German manager has delivered a message of hope: ‘The squad will be stronger this year than it was last year. That’s a real reason for real optimism’.
Klopp knows he has to get the players up to speed before their two-legged Champions League play-off: ‘We all know in a few weeks we have these qualifiers and there will be pressure on the game’, he told liverpoolfc.com, ‘but now we have the time to prepare for this and we have to use the basis we created last year, it was not too bad. We all know it could have been maybe a little bit better but it could have been much worse’, he recognised.
With pre-season friendlies just days away, Klopp insisted on the team’s improvement. ‘We are now one of the top four teams in England so now we want to keep this situation and work with it and improve’, he said.
