Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA), Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi, has charged the Super Eagles to go all out for the win against South Africa on Tuesday when both sides clash in the match-day eight fixture of the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Iloenyosi stated this on Sunday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
The Super Eagles had defeated Amavubis of Rwanda by a lone goal to rekindle their qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Iloenyosi said that the current crop of players under the watchful eyes of Coach Eric Chelle have what it takes to beat South Africa in their backyard despite being on top of the Group with three matches left in the qualifiers, where the winner of the group qualifies automatically for the biggest football mundial, with the runners-up eligible for the playoffs spot.
The Anambra FA Boss noted that the win against Rwanda was a big morale booster for the lads going into Tuesday’s crucial contest. The top football administrator expressed hope that the Super Eagles can still top the group with a win against South Africa and in the remaining matches of the contest, while saying that Nigeria cannot afford to miss the World Cup on two consecutive occasions, having missed out on the 2022 World Cup hosted by Qatar.
Iloenyosi said: “Let me first commend the lads for the display and the win against Rwanda on Saturday, as it was a dicey game. This win will serve as the needed boost for the team going into the game against South Africa on Tuesday. I believe we have a strong team and what it takes to beat them at their base, having collected two points from us here in Nigeria.
“I call on the players to remain focused, dedicated and give a good account of themselves on the pitch come Tuesday by taking their pound of flesh just like the South Africans did in June when they came here. Soccer-loving Nigerians should also put the Eagles in their prayers as we seek to go through to the next stage.
The Super Eagles are currently third on the log with 10 points from 7 matches, while South Africa are topping the group with 16 points having played 7 matches as well.
