NIGERIA kept the hope of qualifying for the FIFA 2018 World Cup alive with an emphatic 4-0 drubbing of Cameroon on Friday.
The Super Eagles shot into the lead of the match played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo in the 29th minute through Odion Ighalo’s left footer which beat goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa flat.
Captain Mikel Obi registered his name on the scorers’ sheet after he connected a Victor Moses corner kick in the 42nd minute. Chelsea player Moses had wasted an opportunity to double Nigeria’s lead just moments before the corner kick.
Moses was to eventually take the match beyond the African champions in the 56th minute of the match. His midfield combination culminated in the the shot he took outside the Indomitable Lions’ goal area for Nigeria’s third.
Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to score the Super Eagles fourth goal through a header in the 77th minute. Ogenyi Onazi had run down the right flank before releasing the ball for the Leicester City player to connect.
After the first round of matches, Nigeria remain top of African Group B of the Russia 2018 qualifiers with the maximum nine points from three matches.
