1,000 doctors in Kaduna for 8th doctor’s games

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Monday commenced the 8th edition of the Doctors’ Games in Kaduna State, drawing medical practitioners from across the country to celebrate unity, wellness, and professional camaraderie.

The week-long event, tagged ‘KADA 2026’, has drawn over 1,000 medical practitioners from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and the diaspora.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, NMA President, Prof. Bala Mohammed Audu, described the gathering as a celebration of friendship, teamwork, and healthy competition among members of the medical profession.

“Today, we gather here to celebrate what is often called the human race, under the theme of friendship, teamwork, and healthy competition,” he said.

Audu noted that beyond their demanding professional duties, doctors are human beings united by shared values and common aspirations, stressing that the Games serve as a reminder of the importance of balance and solidarity.

He explained that the Doctors’ Games were conceived to promote peace, happiness, better living, unity, and camaraderie among doctors nationwide, particularly at a time when medical practice remains intense and taxing.

According to him, the event offers doctors an opportunity to recharge, reconnect, and strengthen the bonds that hold the association together, while promoting physical and mental well-being.

The NMA president commended members of the Advisory Committee, National Sports Committee, state officials, and other stakeholders for their dedication in organising the Games, urging athletes to compete with passion, fairness, and respect for the rules.

Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of NMA Kaduna State Branch and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Hassan Bala Salihu, expressed pride that Kaduna was hosting the 8th edition of the Games.

Salihu said this year’s celebration focuses on unity, wellness, resilience, and professional harmony, emphasising that a healthy doctor is essential to building a healthy nation.

He added that from February 9 to 15, participants would engage in various indoor and outdoor sporting activities designed to promote teamwork, discipline, and national integration across ethnic and regional lines.

The Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, represented by the Senior Special Assistant on Stakeholder Relations, Engr. Martins Galadima conveyed Governor Uba Sani’s goodwill to participants and reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through improved facilities, recruitment of personnel, and better welfare for health workers.
