170 golfers set for Seyi Makinde Women Support Pro-invitational, amateur golf tourney

No fewer than 170 golfers across the country are expected to compete for honours at the 7th Seyi Makinde Women Support Pro-Invitational and Amateur Open Golf Championship.

The three-day tournament is scheduled for this weekend at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Onireke GRA.

The tournament is expected to bring together captains of industries and notable personalities to IGC as invited professionals are expected to play on Friday.

Welcome party is expected to be held on Friday, at 7pm while the tee-off ceremony is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday at 6:30am daily with the closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday at 5pm.

Sponsor of the tournament, Oyo State governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde will tee-off the tournament proper on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference, IGC Captain, Mr Tunji Oladosu, said every arrangement is in place to make the tournament a memorable one.

“I must commend the governor Makinde for his consistency in supporting and promoting golf in the country and we are happy for hosting the tournament not just anywhere but IGC that is known as ‘Home of golf and its tradition’.

“The competition is quite a key one term: “Women and we all know that women are an integral part of our society and we cannot do without them, they are key towards the nation’s development and we need to appreciate them.

“We must give kudos to the initiator and sponsor of the tournament for deem it fit to empower women through golf. I must commend the governor for supporting the vision because if he did not believe in the interest of the women, he would not sponsor the tournament, so, we are grateful to him for using golf as the platform towards propagating the idea having realised that golf is unique in nature,” Oladosu said.

Meanwhile, initiator of the tournament, Mrs Ronke Adepetu, in her remarks said: “Governor Makinde is a lover of sports. He is a philanthropist, golfer and has always supported sports development in all ramifications.

“We started this tournament in 2015 even before he became governor and this is not about politics but his passion for women and he has been consistent ever since.”

Also present at the briefing is IGC Competition Secretary, Mr Ayo Aluko and a member of the committee, Mr Benard Ndukka.
