Cote d’Ivoire head coach, Emerse Fae, has expressed frustration after his side fell 2-1 to Germany in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E clash at the Toronto Stadium on Saturday night.
The result left the Elephants without points from the fixture and handed Julian Nagelsmann’s team qualification for the Round of 32.
Despite taking an early lead through Franck Kessie, Cote d’Ivoire were unable to maintain control of the match as Germany improved after the break and turned the game around through substitute Deniz Undav, who scored twice in the second half.
The defeat marked a setback for Cote d’Ivoire in a match where they had briefly placed themselves in a strong position before conceding control of the contest.
Cote d’Ivoire started the match with intensity and were rewarded early when Franck Kessie converted to give his side the lead. The goal came against the run of play in a period where Germany were pushing forward and attempting to establish rhythm.

After the opener, Cote d’Ivoire attempted to manage the tempo and limit Germany’s attacking transitions. For long spells in the first half, they held their shape and looked organised in defence.
However, Germany gradually increased pressure as the match progressed, forcing Cote d’Ivoire deeper and limiting their attacking outlets.
Germany made tactical adjustments in the second half, with Julian Nagelsmann introducing Deniz Undav from the bench. The change had a direct impact on the match as Germany improved their attacking movement and began to create clearer chances in the final third.
Undav scored the equaliser before adding a second goal later in the half to complete the comeback. His double ensured Germany secured maximum points and confirmed their progression to the knockout stage.
Cote d’Ivoire struggled to respond after conceding the equaliser, with their attacking play becoming less structured as Germany controlled possession and dictated the pace of the game.
After the match, Emerse Fae highlighted the disappointment of his team, pointing to their inability to hold onto the lead they had earned early in the game.
“It’s more frustration that we’re feeling after this defeat, because we were able to open the score against this strong German side,” Fae told reporters.
The result leaves Cote d’Ivoire needing a positive response in their remaining group fixtures as they look to revive their qualification hopes.
Germany, meanwhile, move into the Round of 32 with confidence after another comeback performance that underlined their depth and impact from the bench.
