Lionel Messi’s latest World Cup hat-trick against Algeria has once again shifted attention to his place in tournament history, as he continues to extend and chase records across appearances, goals, assists and other key metrics.
The Argentina captain’s performance in the Group J match in Kansas City took his World Cup goal tally to 16, drawing him level with Miroslav Klose.
Messi’s World Cup records
The milestone came in a game where he also added to another record, reaching 17 World Cup victories, a mark previously held by the German striker.
At 38 years and 357 days, Messi also became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick.
The previous record belonged to Cristiano Ronaldo, who was 33 years and 130 days when he scored a treble against Spain at the 2018 World Cup.

Messi was already Argentina’s leading scorer in World Cup history before the Algeria game. His hat-trick extended his gap over Gabriel Batistuta (10), with Diego Maradona and Guillermo Stabile on eight, Mario Kempes on six, and Gonzalo Higuain on five.
The latest goals also made him the highest-scoring South American in World Cup history, moving ahead of Brazil’s Ronaldo, who scored 15.
From distance, Messi added two more records in the same match, as his goals against Algeria took his tally of World Cup strikes from outside the penalty area to six, surpassing Brazil’s Rivellino, who had five.
His previous long-range goals came in 2014 against Bosnia and Herzegovina, IR Iran and Nigeria, and in 2022 against Mexico.
Longevity across six World Cups
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are part of an elite list of players to have featured in six World Cup editions. A record previously shared with Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthaus, Rafa Marquez and Andres Guardado.
His consistency across tournaments is reflected in his overall involvement, as he holds the record for the most World Cup appearances, reaching 27 matches after featuring in the 2026 opener against Algeria, having earlier broken Matthaus’s record in the 2022 final when he reached 26 appearances.
He has also made 20 appearances as captain, more than Rafa Marquez (17) and Diego Maradona (16).
Dribbling, minutes and influence
Messi’s influence extends beyond goals, as the Argentinian captain holds the record for most dribbles completed in World Cup history, with 46 successful take-ons at Brazil 2014 alone, the third-highest in a single edition. Jairzinho recorded 47 in 1970, while Diego Maradona leads with 53 in 1986.
He also holds the record for most minutes played in World Cup history, with 2,404 minutes, surpassing Paolo Maldini’s 2,217-minute mark during the Qatar 2022 final.
Assists and all-round output
Messi is the only player to register assists in five different World Cups.
His closest challengers, Pele, Grzegorz Lato, Diego Maradona and David Beckham, each did so in three editions.
He and Pele share the record for most assists in the knockout stages, with six each. Both also share the record for the highest combined goal contributions in World Cup history, with 21.
Messi is also the only player to score in every stage of a World Cup tournament: group stage, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, achieved during Argentina’s campaign in Qatar.
Record of consistency
He remains the only player to score in World Cups as a teenager, in his 20s and in his 30s. Pele came close but missed the mark by four months.
Another longevity record is the span between his first and most recent World Cup goals, which stands at 20 years. The only player with a longer span is Cristiano Ronaldo, at 16 years and 160 days.
Individual recognition and awards
Since the introduction of the Player of the Match award in 2002, Messi has won it 12 times, the highest in the competition’s history.
His four awards at Brazil 2014 remain a single-tournament record, which he shares with Wesley Sneijder from South Africa 2010.
He is also one of only two players, alongside Pele, to win the adidas Golden Ball more than once, achieving it in 2014 and 2022.
What comes next
With each match, Messi continues to add to a statistical profile that already defines World Cup history.
His current trajectory leaves several milestones within reach, including further extension of his appearance record and potential increases in goal contributions if Argentina advance deeper into the tournament.
