Andy Murray wins Vienna Open title to close gap on world No.1 Novak Djokovic

ANDY MURRAY’S charge to the summit continued after waltzing to the Vienna Open title.

Murray was crowned champion thanks to a 6-3, 7–6 win over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Austria.

It means Murray now trails world No.1 Novak Djovokic by just 415 points and the Serb will be under pressure to defend his title in the Paris Masters.

Murray, 29, has never been top of the world rankings.

But winning again this week- provided his rival does not reach the final – will be enough to end Djokovic’s stranglehold on top spot.

He said: “I get a step closer with every win but it’s still a long way from here.

“From two to one seems a small jump in a way but it’s the hardest one to make. To go from 100 to 50 is more spots but is a lot easier.”

“I was thinking more about how you are going to win the match rather than what it would mean if you did win it.

“But obviously it’s nice to win my seventh tournament. A lot of them have come in the last few months.

“After the Australian Open I struggled a little bit for a couple of months, but the last few months have been very good.”

Murray’s win here wrapped up his third consecutive title after recent triumphs in Beijing and Shanghai.

He has lost only three times since the French Open in June – putting himself in striking distance of becoming the men’s best tennis player.
