Arsenal hold 10-man Chelsea to 1-1 draw

Arsenal held 10-man Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in a tense London derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Mikel Merino scored the equaliser after Trevoh Chalobah had put Chelsea ahead early in the second half.

Chelsea went down to 10 men late in the first half when Moises Caicedo was sent off for a foul on Merino following a VAR review.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Chelsea struck first when Chalobah headed in a corner shortly after the restart.

Merino levelled in the 59th minute, ensuring Arsenal avoided defeat in a match where both sides traded long spells of pressure.

The draw keeps Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City and six ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League table.

Arsenal will still feel they missed a chance to widen the gap, while Chelsea were satisfied to avoid a defeat that could have hurt their title chase.

Both teams came into the match in strong form, with Arsenal unbeaten in 17 matches and Chelsea unbeaten in seven.

Their recent Champions League wins—Chelsea over Barcelona and Arsenal over Bayern Munich—added extra momentum before kick-off.

That energy faded quickly as the first half turned physical, with several fouls and bookings on both sides.

Caicedo’s red card was the major flashpoint, arriving after he caught Merino on the ankle.

Chelsea complained moments later when Piero Hincapie caught Chalobah with an elbow, but play continued without further punishment.

Chalobah’s goal gave Chelsea hope of an unlikely win, but Arsenal responded through Merino after good work from Bukayo Saka on the right.

In the closing minutes, Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez made key saves from Saka and Merino, preventing Arsenal from completing the turnaround.
