Arsenal knocks out Real Madrid to reach Champions League semi-finals

Arsenal have secured a historic place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a commanding 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, completing a 5-1 aggregate win.

This marks only the third time in the club’s history that they’ve reached the semi-final stage of Europe’s elite competition.

Coming into the second leg with a 3-0 advantage from the first match at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta’s side maintained their momentum with a disciplined and clinical performance on Spanish soil.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring in the 65th minute, calmly lifting a chipped finish past Thibaut Courtois to silence the home crowd. However, Real Madrid responded almost instantly through Vinícius Júnior, who capitalized on a rare lapse from William Saliba to equalize just two minutes later.

As the game approached full-time, Arsenal sealed the tie with a devastating counterattack.

Gabriel Martinelli latched onto a perfect through ball from Mikel Merino and coolly slotted past Courtois in the 93rd minute to make it 2-1 on the night and 5-1 overall.

Despite a spirited crowd at the Bernabéu, Madrid never looked close to a comeback.

A missed Panenka penalty from Saka in the first half and a denied penalty appeal via VAR were among the few dramatic moments for the hosts, who appeared off the pace across both legs.

Real Madrid, who have now lost six matches in this Champions League campaign, were outclassed across the tie.

Their frustrations boiled over late in the game, with Antonio Rüdiger and Thomas Partey both booked during a heated exchange — the latter now suspended for the semi-final first leg.

Youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly impressed in midfield, showing composure well beyond his years, while Merino’s role as a false nine paid dividends as he created both of Arsenal’s goals.

The result is another famous European night for the Gunners, with jubilant away fans drawing comparisons to their 2006 triumph over Madrid in the same stadium.

Arsenal now turn their focus to the semi-finals, as dreams of continental glory remain very much alive.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid must regroup quickly ahead of their upcoming Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on April 26.
