The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has officially cleared Arthur Okonkwo to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, making the 24-year-old Wrexham goalkeeper eligible to play for the Super Eagles.
The approval was recorded on FIFA’s Change of Association platform on April 6, 2026.
Okonkwo, born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, spent his formative years in Arsenal’s academy, joining the club at the age of eight.
His youth career included representing England at U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels between 2015 and 2019. However, he never featured for the senior England team, which cleared the way for the international switch.
Currently, Okonkwo is Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper in the EFL Championship. Since making his move from Arsenal permanent, he has made 119 appearances for the club and contributed to their rise through the English football tiers.
This season alone, he has played 42 matches in all competitions, keeping 10 clean sheets in 37 league games.

The decision to switch allegiance followed discussions with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year.
Administrative processes prevented his inclusion in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, but he is now eligible for selection and adds depth to Nigeria’s goalkeeping options alongside Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.
His move to Nigeria provides the Super Eagles with a goalkeeper who combines height, composure, and experience in competitive leagues, making him an important prospect for the national team.
Background
Arthur Okonkwo was born in Camden, London, to Nigerian parents.
He joined Arsenal’s academy at age eight and developed through the club’s youth system, learning goalkeeping fundamentals and discipline from an early age.
Early development
Okonkwo progressed through Arsenal’s ranks but did not make a senior appearance.
His years at the club laid the foundation for his style, emphasising positioning, consistency, and game awareness.
Loan spells
To gain first-team exposure, he had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz. These stints provided competitive match experience and helped him adapt to senior-level football.
Move to Wrexham
Okonkwo joined Wrexham on loan in 2023 and quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper. His performances led to a permanent transfer, and he has since made over 100 appearances, helping the team achieve successive promotions.
International career switch
After representing England at youth levels, Okonkwo’s switch to Nigeria was approved by FIFA in April 2026.
This makes him eligible for the Super Eagles, following discussions with coach Eric Chelle.
He now competes for a place alongside Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.
