Biggest Super Eagles’ continental rivalries

Whenever the Super Eagles wear the green and white jersey, their representation stretches beyond winning a match in another 90 minutes; it is about playing their heart out knowing that the national pride and history are on the line.

Over decades, the team has built stunning achievements, but it is the rivalries that often bring the fiercest emotion, drama and lasting memories.

In this article, Sporting Tribune highlights three of Nigeria’s key international rivalries

Nigeria vs Ghana — The Jollof Derby

No rivalry in African football carries the flavour, history, and drama of Nigeria vs Ghana. Often dubbed “The Jollof Derby,” this clash is more than just football; it’s a contest of pride between two giants that share deep cultural, linguistic, and historical ties.

Their meetings have spanned over seven decades, producing everything from thrilling encounters to heartbreaking defeats.

Ghana leads the all-time record, but Nigeria’s memorable victories, including their 2006 AFCON group-stage win courtesy of Taye Taiwo’s thunderous strike, remain part of Nigerian football folklore.

When the two sides met in the 2022 World Cup playoff, the entire continent tuned in. Ghana edged through on away goals, igniting debates that still echo today.

Nigeria vs Cameroon — The Battle for African Supremacy

When it comes to pure competition, no fixture defines the Super Eagles’ ambitions like Nigeria vs Cameroon. Their duels have shaped the story of African football, often deciding who reigns supreme.

From the 1984 AFCON final to the heartbreaking 2000 final in Lagos, where Cameroon edged Nigeria on penalties, the rivalry has always been fierce. Yet, Nigeria’s revenge wins notably the 4–0 triumph in 2004 AFCON qualifiers and the 3–2 victory at AFCON 2019 show how emotionally charged these encounters remain.

Nigeria vs Benin Republic — The Emerging Neighbourly Feud

Unlike Ghana or Cameroon, the Benin Republic was once seen as Nigeria’s less-threatening neighbour. But times are changing.

In recent years, the Cheetahs have grown into a disciplined and tactically strong side, eager to prove a point.

The rivalry took a new turn when Benin stunned Nigeria 2–1 in June 2024, their first-ever win over the Super Eagles — a result that shook confidence across Nigerian football circles. It was more than just a loss; it was a warning that the region’s football hierarchy is no longer fixed.
