China embassy clarifies visa issue for Nigerian athletes

The Embassy of China in Nigeria has responded to claims that Nigerian athletes were unable to participate in the Guangzhou World Athletics Relays due to visa delays.

According to the embassy, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) withdrew from the competition, citing visa issues, but the embassy disputes this claim.

The embassy stated that it received a request for assistance with visa processing on April 24 and immediately guided the National Sports Commission of Nigeria in preparing the necessary materials, and that it received the application materials on May 6 and expedited the visa issuance process, completing it on May 8.

The embassy asserted that it has always actively supported people-to-people and sports cooperation between China and Nigeria and has provided efficient and professional assistance with visa applications and attributed the athletes’ inability to participate in the event to insufficient time for the application process, rather than any deliberate delay.

It further stated that it regrets the situation and emphasised its commitment to promoting friendly exchanges between China and Nigeria, saying it stands ready to continue providing support and assistance for cooperation in various fields, including sports.

This incident highlights the importance of timely planning and communication in international sports events.

The embassy’s prompt response and assistance with visa processing demonstrate its commitment to facilitating sports exchanges between China and Nigeria.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has been urged to review its application process and ensure that sufficient time is allowed for visa processing in future international events.

This will help prevent similar situations from arising and enable Nigerian athletes to participate in events without unnecessary delays.

The incident also underscores the need for clear communication and cooperation between sports organisations, governments, and embassies to ensure the smooth participation of athletes in international events.

By working together, both countries can strengthen their sports ties and promote mutual understanding.
