Donovan drops 37 points against Bulls as Cavs continue perfect start to season

Donovan Mitchell had a brilliant performance as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeat the Chicago Bulls 144-126 in their NBA Cup opener on Saturday.

Cleveland are now the sixth team to go 14-0 and the first since the Golden State Warriors went 24-0 in the 2015/16 season. Their 14-game winning streak marks the first in the franchise’s 55-year existence. The Cavs won 13 in a row back when LeBron played for them. This victory against the Chicago Bulls sets a new franchise record for most points in a game.

Donovan Mitchell scored 37 points at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, including 18 points in the fourth quarter, while Coby White led the Bulls with 29 points.

Cavs started strong as they led the bulls 49-34 at the end of the first quarter, earning a 15 point lead, courtesy of Darius Garland scoring 15 points, he was also 5-for-6 for shooting and provided 6 assists as well. Donovan added 11 points as they set a franchise record for the most points in a first quarter (49).

The Bulls went on a 12-4 run at the beginning of the second quarter, closing it to a 10-point game. Cleveland retained a 77-73 lead at the end of halftime as they also went on a 14-6 run. Cavs shot 65.1% from the field and also had a 55% shooting from behind the arc.

Cavs continued the game strong as they scored 30 points in the third quarter, holding a 107-102 lead. Both teams shot efficiently from the three-point range. The Bulls went on a brilliant 13-5 run from late in the third quarter to early in the fourth quarter as they tied the game 110-110.

Cleveland came back strong as they went on a 12-3 run in the fourth quarter, turning the tie into a 122-113 lead, they went on another 12-2 run, Donovan scoring 5 points while also providing 2 assists. The Bulls couldn’t find their flow as they missed 3 shots and gave up two turnovers.

The Cavs, playing without starting forward, Evan Mobley, who has been battling an illness for the past few days looked strong as they continued their perfect run with a home court victory.
