In a “miracle” FA Cup upset on Wednesday, League Two team Grimsby Town shocked Southampton, defeating them 2-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Mariners became the first team in a single campaign to beat five higher-division teams in the competition. Gavan Holohan scored two penalties for Grimsby, while Duje Caleta-Car scored a late goal for the Premier League strugglers.
Grimsby manager Paul Hurst expressed his delight at the win, saying, “Just delighted for the players. What an effort. We kept disciplined.

“Look at what that means to the support. We turned up, hoping for a miracle, and to be in the quarter-finals is incredible. It is just a fantastic day, we have gone down in the history books. It is a very special day.”
This defeat marked the first time that Southampton had been eliminated from the FA Cup as a top-flight team by a side in the fourth tier.
Grimsby’s next challenge in the last eight will be Brighton and Hove Albion.
This was Grimsby’s first win against top-flight opposition as a fourth-tier side in the FA Cup since their victory over Middlesbrough in the third round in January 1989.
