Heavyweight boxer, George Foreman, passes away at 76

Legendary boxer and entrepreneur George Foreman has passed away at the age of 76.

His family announced his death on social media, stating that he “peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.”

Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman overcame a difficult childhood in Houston’s Fifth Ward to become one of boxing’s most dominant figures.

His rise to fame began with a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He famously waved a small American flag in celebration, a gesture that sparked mixed reactions. Reflecting on that moment, Foreman once said, “I waved the flag so they knew I was American. Everyone started applauding, so I waved it higher.”

Foreman turned professional in 1969 and quickly built an impressive record. In 1973, he delivered a historic performance against the undefeated Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica, knocking him down six times in just two rounds to claim the WBA and WBC heavyweight titles. He defended his championship successfully before facing Muhammad Ali in the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974. Ali, using his “rope-a-dope” strategy, handed Foreman his first professional defeat with an eighth-round knockout.

Following a loss to Jimmy Young in 1977, Foreman experienced a life-changing spiritual awakening, leading him to become an ordained Christian minister and step away from boxing. He later described the moment, saying, “I had a vision I was dead and alive again. And I was hopeless—the most hopeless thing I’ve ever been in, the most depressing, scary thing.”

A decade later, Foreman shocked the world by returning to the ring at the age of 38. Defying expectations, he made history in 1994 by defeating Michael Moorer to reclaim the heavyweight title at 45, making him the oldest champion in the division’s history.

Reflecting on his comeback, he said, “The second time I made a point of believing it. The first time I didn’t believe it.”

Beyond boxing, Foreman built a successful career as an entrepreneur, most notably with the George Foreman Grill, which debuted in 1994 and sold over 100 million units worldwide.

He also remained committed to his faith and community, founding the George Foreman Youth and Community Center in Houston.

Foreman was married to Mary Joan Martelly from 1985 until his passing and had 12 children—five sons, all named George, and seven daughters. Explaining his unique naming choice, he once said, “I named all my sons George Edward Foreman so they would always have something in common.”

In 2019, Foreman suffered a personal tragedy with the loss of his daughter, Freeda. He publicly mourned her passing, sharing, “First Sunday in 42 years without my Freeda.”

His remarkable life and career were portrayed in the 2023 biopic Big George Foreman. Reflecting on the film, he admitted, “It’s not easy to tell a story about your life when you really spend a lifetime hiding your life.”

George Foreman leaves behind a legacy of resilience, faith, and excellence, not only as a boxing champion but also as an inspiration in business and life.
